Short answer
QuillBot is a practical starting point for a short free check: its public detector page lists 1,200 words per scan. That is an access-based pick, not an accuracy award. Compare the limits below, keep your writing history, and investigate a flag before making a decision about a writer.
| Tool | Verdict | Best for | Main limitation | Published access or limit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| QuillBot | Starting pick for short public checks | A passage within its displayed allowance | A free result cannot prove authorship | Public page lists 1,200 words per scan; confirm daily allowance |
| Grammarly | Convenient public checker | Writers already using its editing tools | Public web access differs from paid integrated features | Public free checker; in-product access depends on plan |
| Walter Writes | Additional free detector option | A second view of a draft | No result predicts an institution’s report | Free AI detector advertised on its current site |
| AI Text Detector | No-account passage check | Readers who want the tool on this site | Only the first 15,000 characters reach analysis | Form accepts 50,000 characters; shorter passages avoid truncation |
| GPTZero | Account-based option to investigate | A writer prepared to inspect account limits | Do not infer current quota from an old review | Check the free account allowance before relying on it |
What does completely free actually mean?
A free detector can mean a public form, an account with a recurring allowance, or a trial that expires. Those are different offers. A tool can accept a long document while analysing only part of it. A daily request limit can also make an apparently generous word allowance unsuitable for a class or an editorial queue.
Our choice for a short scan is based on a stated input allowance and an accessible workflow. We have not established which detector is most accurate. A teacher choosing a service needs more than a large input box: permission to upload work, a process for reviewing errors, and a way to explain a flag to the writer.
Use the comparison as a shortlist. Read the limit on the actual form before pasting your work. If an account is required, check the allowance shown inside that account. A search-result snippet or an old review may describe a different version of the service.

Which free detector should you choose?
Choose QuillBot when a short passage fits the limit displayed on its form. Choose the Grammarly public page when you want to keep the check separate from a paid editing subscription. If you already have access to a school-approved tool, start with your institution’s instructions instead of treating a consumer service as a replacement.
Walter Writes is another option for a second check. Comparing two estimates may identify a passage worth reviewing, but agreement does not turn either result into proof. Both tools might respond to the same formulaic style. Disagreement is a reason to slow down and inspect the writing process, not to keep testing until a preferred score appears.
For this site’s own detector, work with a passage shorter than the backend analysis allowance. The input counter is not the same thing as the amount actually analysed. We make that distinction explicit because a long submission that is silently shortened can leave important material outside the check.
Is there a free AI detector with no word limit?
Do not assume an unlimited claim covers every part of the service. A provider may distinguish characters from words, free users from paid users, and an input allowance from a monthly quota. An advertised lack of a word limit can still coexist with account, processing or fair-use restrictions.
For a long document, first decide whether uploading it is appropriate. A thesis, unpublished manuscript or student essay may contain confidential details. Review the service’s retention terms and your organisation’s policy. Splitting a document into passages can also change context, so do not present passage scores as if they were a validated whole-document result.
Can a free AI detector be reliable enough for a decision?
Cost does not establish reliability. OpenAI withdrew its own classifier in July 2023 because of low accuracy. That history does not measure the tools in our table, but it illustrates why a confident label needs a stated scope and supporting evidence. A current vendor benchmark is also different from a test on your own kind of writing.
Liang and colleagues’ 2023 research examined bias against non-native English writers in the detectors they studied. Do not transfer a percentage from that study to a different product or model version. The practical lesson is to consider language background and the consequences of an error before treating a stylistic signal as an accusation.
Methodology: how this shortlist was assembled
This is a public-access and workflow comparison. We examined published product pages and distinguished a public checker from paid integrated features. We did not run a comparative corpus, calculate accuracy, or award performance scores. Availability statements are vendor-attributed; account-specific limits remain subject to a person’s verification.
The decision criteria are usable access, clarity about input limits, and suitability for a cautious writing-review workflow. We did not assign numerical weights. A future test would need retained samples, known authorship, the exact product version, and an error log before any accuracy ranking could be published.
No detector score should be the only evidence in a misconduct, hiring or publishing decision. Read a flagged passage, inspect its sources, and ask the writer about its development. A clearer argument in the writer’s own voice is a better editing goal than a lower detector percentage.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a completely free AI detector?
Yes. Public free checkers exist, and some products provide a limited free account. Check the actual form and account terms for input and usage caps. Free access does not imply unlimited processing or a result that proves who wrote the text.
Which free AI detector is most accurate?
This page does not establish an accuracy winner. Our shortlist compares access and published limitations, not a completed benchmark. A useful evaluation needs known human and AI samples, documented conditions, and reporting of both missed AI text and false flags on human writing.
Can a free detector tell me my Turnitin score?
No. A consumer check is not your institution’s Turnitin report. Products can use different models, supported languages and thresholds. Preserve drafts and follow the assignment’s policy rather than treating one service’s score as a prediction of another.
